Shavāsana (Corpse)

About the Pose

This is the ultimate pose and is traditionally done at the end of every yoga practice. It is important to practice so that you may deeply rest and integrate the effects from the rest of the poses you have practiced. Although it seems so simple, to just lie there, it can be a challenge to remain in stillness, in your body and mind. A deep Shavāsana is comparable to a nap, and can reset your nervous system.

Benefits from the Pose

  1. When practiced with proper alignment in stillness, this pose becomes an incredibly effective restorative posture that deeply soothes and calms your nervous system, helping to release stress and integrate the benefits of your practice.

  2. The relaxation of your body in this pose encourages your digestive organs to unwind, promoting better digestion and alleviating discomfort in your gut.

  3. The deeply calming nature of this pose activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which can help lower blood pressure and reduce the effects of stress on your cardiovascular system.

  4. This posture deeply relaxes your entire central nervous system, promoting a sense of peace and easing muscle tension, which also helps to soften and smooth out the wrinkles of your skin.

  5. While this may be one of the most challenging poses, its true difficulty lies in being able to fully surrender and remain still in a state of quiet, embracing the profound stillness of your body and mind.
